Ante Up For Africa Donations Help Build Gangy High School In Darfur
Since the Darfur conflict began in 2003, secondary education in the area has suffered tremendously, with little opportunity for students to continue their education past the 8th-grade level. In 2007, the Darfur Peace and Development Organization (DPDO) was given enough funds to begin construction for a new high school in Darfur. Located in the city of El Fasher, also the capital of North Darfur, Gangy High School will serve hundreds of orphans and other war-affected youth and provide the opportunity to complete higher levels of schooling and pass required tests needed to graduate.
With money raised from the Ante up for Africa San Manuel Casino’s Celebrity Poker Tournament and the Third-Annual World Series of Poker, Ante Up For Africa (AUFA) was able to continue the project’s momentum with an initial donation of $150,000 in August 2009 to support school construction and an additional donation of $200,000 in November 2009 to further support construction of the main buildings of Gangy High School.
“We have raised over $3 million to date for relief efforts in Africa and are proud to share that the money raised goes directly to our beneficiaries,” said the organization’s co-founder, Annie Duke. “The Gangy High School project is just one example of the many ways Ante Up For Africa is actively helping the Darfur communities in need.”
The Gangy High School target completion date is March 31, 2010. To contribute an individual donation for as little as $5, send checks to AUFA with reference of Gangy High School. All proceeds will go directly to DPDO to help support this school.
